In the quest for a sustainable future, Synaptic Dialogues explores the synergies between human and non-human agents, revealing the transformative power of collaboration. This interactive installation, developed for Vontobel Bank in Zurich, originated from Emidio Battipaglia’s original concept, with Federico Peliti and myself contributing to the technical realization. By linking people, technology, and the environment, the project highlights the potential of these relationships to foster a shared sense of belonging, inclusivity, and common purpose—elements essential for tackling global challenges.
At the heart of Synaptic Dialogues lies a reflection on the delicate balance between technological progress and ecological preservation. The project juxtaposes AI server farms with the natural world, prompting a reassessment of our impact on the planet and an embrace of more sustainable practices. This fusion of technology and nature underscores the importance of harmonious coexistence, a concept that guided the collaborative development process.
The artwork itself is a dynamic encounter between organic and technological elements. Two datasets —one composed of images of a data center, and the other of a rainforest— photographed by Emidio, are fed into an artificial-intelligence system to generate visual patterns. Within this framework, I developed the plant sensing system that enables the installation’s bio-responsive capabilities. Sensors attached to plants throughout the space capture real-time signals that reflect their physiological state, environmental conditions, and interactions with visitors. These biological signals are transmitted to the computer system, where they function as variables that influence the AI’s image generation process.
The resulting visuals are continuously modulated by the plants’ current state and the presence of visitors in the exhibition space, allowing spectators to experience a living dialogue between technology and nature while relaxing in a hammock. This sensing layer transforms the installation from a static display into a responsive ecosystem where human presence, plant vitality, and artificial intelligence converge in real-time visual generation.
The technical implementation required close collaboration among the team members to ensure seamless integration between the organic sensing components and the AI visualization system. Each sensor serves as a translation point, converting plant responses into data that the artificial intelligence can interpret and incorporate into its visual output. This creates a continuous feedback loop where the biological and digital realms inform each other.
Synaptic Dialogues also explores the evolution of communities, suggesting that the key to solving complex issues lies in embracing collaboration among human and non-human agents. The project questions the role of power—both technological and political—in shaping our collective experiences, urging us to rethink our relationship with nature. This philosophical foundation influenced the technical approach, ensuring that the sensing system would capture not just individual plant responses, but the broader interactions within the installation environment.
The title Synaptic Dialogues evokes the importance of interconnection and communication, mirroring the synapses that transmit information between nerve cells. These dialogues emphasize the need for collaboration and co-creation to develop innovative artistic expressions and solutions to environmental challenges. The sensor network functions similarly to these neural pathways, creating communication channels between the biological and digital components of the work.
Confronted with global issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and social inequalities, Synaptic Dialogues demonstrates the value of interconnectedness and cooperation. The project imagines a future where symbiotic communities—grounded in sustainability, inclusivity, and belonging—pave the way toward a more harmonious and prosperous world. Through the responsive sensing system, visitors become participants in this symbiotic relationship, their presence contributing to the evolving visual narrative.
By spotlighting the emergence of new interconnected communities, Synaptic Dialogues encourages reflection on the influence of technology, ecology, and inclusivity in contemporary society. The installation serves as a catalyst for reflection and dialogue, inviting consideration of the role that technology, ecology, and community play in building our shared future.
